US church to burn Koran on 9/11 anniversary

AFP

A US church plans to publicly burn copies of the Koran on the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

The announcement, from Florida's Dove World Outreach Centre, has prompted threats from Islamic groups and warnings the move will trigger a rise in hate crimes.

The church said on its Facebook page it will hold an "International Burn a Koran Day" on September 11, asking other religious groups to join in standing "against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

"Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11," pastor Terry Jones said

"We will burn Korans because we think it's time for Christians, for churches, for politicians to stand up and say no; Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the US," the organizer of the burning action added.

"We've got many death threats from jihad groups, but we cannot react by fear and we cannot compromise our beliefs. Somebody must stand up," Jones added.

Reactions to the Koran burning announcement were swift.

Members of the Al-Falluja jihadist forum have threatened to "spill rivers of your (American) blood" and "a war the likes of which you have never seen before."

Mainstream Muslim groups also denounced the move and lamented the sentiments promoted by the Gainesville church.

"Unfortunately in (Florida) and nationwide, Islamophobia are actually on the rise," Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) spokesman Ramsey Kilic told AFP.

"I'm more afraid of those who have anti-Muslim sentiments and may think this is a legitimate action and may want to attack a mosque or attack a Muslim on the street," he added.

However, Kilic said, "we are not taking any action to avoid this... we don't want to give attention to this, because that's what they want."

The Dove church's Facebook site, since the announcement, is rife with threatening messages and corresponding anti-Islam rants.

Besides the Koran burning ceremony, the Dove World Outreach Centre also plans an anti-homosexual event August 2 outside Gainesville's City Hall. The "No Homo Mayor Protest" targets the city's first openly gay mayor, Craig Lowe.

The website also has for sale "Islam is of The Devil" T-shirts and books by pastor Jones.

while they're at it they can go ahead and burn all the remaining religious texts. wouldn't it be nice to start the fuck over? i mean, sure there'd be new "religions" and other pyramid schemes that would pop up in their place, but at least they'd be OUR relgions, you know? that'd be nice, imo. that's why when people talk so negatively about Scientology, i dont really get it. i'm actually GLAD that there's 20 churches of Scientology in L.A., i'm sick of fucking christianity and jewish traditional crap, it's the 21st century motherfuckers. let's get some new blood in this bitch.

I hope there is some humour in there...at least about the Scientology part. I agree that its good for people to think for themselves and have something to call their own, but Scientology? Started by L. Ron Hubbard the Sci-fi writer? About a race of aliens that we must clean out of ourselves to ever be at peace? The huge celebrity money scam?

How about we start one that makes sense to everyone and doesn't ask for money to keep our personal secrets secret? Say...umm...the Church of the Fonz??? 11jacked.gif The church of C-3P0? We would have a golden idol to worship at least. 09cheese.gif

I'm with Stevedrummer, out with teh stuffy old religions and in with the new sci-fi ones. Christ, it's 2010 - we should be living in space by now.

MetalPoet...as if the traditional religions are based on something so fucking fantastically realistic that it makes a Sci-Fi religion seem stupid. Son of god? ascending to heaven just for believing in the son of god? it's all a horseshit pyramid scheme. I like scientology because at least it's more blatant. You buy your way in. Period. It's pretty upfront. plus, they've got cool actors and musicians in their ranks. Beck, Tom Cruise, Danny Masterson, Giovanni Ribisi, John Travolta, etc. Not bad right? Who christians have, the least famous Baldwin brother and Kirk Cameron. FAIL.

I've always looked at Scientology as the world's biggest tax shelter. Buy your way in? Yep. But I'd wager their most powerful "worshipers" (IE- Cruise, Travolta, Beck, etc) also have the ability to withdraw.

it must be. i get newsletters and offers from scientology because there was a scientologist who used to live and my address. their shit is SO fucking expensive, like $7000 for a 2-lecture series and a few books. it's insane. they have so much money it's obscene, but i'm sure there are plenty of ways that the group as a whole protects it's higher-ups' cash. it's clearly a pyramid scheme, but there are so many heavy-hitting people who are genuinely good human beings who happen to be part of it...it's hard to just paint it as completely insane. at least no more insane than church-going christians...they're all just looking for answers

I think the super-rich higher-ups use it to keep their millions in a tax-free environment, and the rest of the church makes money hand over fist from people who actually "believe". I don't think that everyone in the church is privy to it's "secret", obviously that would be impossible to conceal, even with how secretive the church is.

Stevie Ray Vaughn,

I whole heartedly agree that Christianity, Islam and Judaism (along with a multitude of other religions practiced by the masses) are based on premis' just as gonzo as Scientology. And ya the cash scam is crazy (just as crazy as the money issues and crazy history of the papacy that is involved in Catholicism). And true there are a huge number of big names involved in Scientology, giving it some "respectibility" or "credibility". So i will agree it's not totally insane... just mostly.

One thing I will give Christianity over Scientology, though, is that it's "supposed to be" (not saying it happens nearly as often as it should) based on doing good works. People helping people and building a caring community etc. And people go into it legitimately believing the church to have some merit. Do celebrities go into Scientology actually thinking there is something legit. there, or do they hear from buddies it is a great way to shelter their money and make more? Do people go into Scientology expecting to do good work for the community?

Is a cash scam where people are told they need to spend 7 grand for books and lectures to to be cleansed really all that good, even if it has celeb. supporters? Is it better than the old way where people were being taken advantage of because they needed to believe in something? Ain't it the same shit in a new pile?

Them celeb backers need to actually back a good cause that is beneficial to everyone and doesn't caust people thousands to be a part of. Something real that is a beacon of hope in a doomed world...something like...the Ghostbusters...ok ok, not the Ghostbusters. Something about fixing environmental problems, corporate greed, governmental corruption or building a genuine legitimate community among people again. Sounds impossible, but a Canadian can dream eh!

Oh...and Christiany has the mighty MC Hammer in their ranks! FoR THE WIN!!! 11jacked.gif 09cheese.gif 06shady.gif

The most retarded thing about this is how both the qur'an and the bible preach near identical morals. Ignorance is divine.

Now this is a dose of truth. Its pretty much the same book of bullshit.

Kirk Cameron definetly does equal FAIL. His show " the way of the master" was nothing more than him telling people they were going to hell.

Id say its time for the church of Chuck Norris. The bible is the list of Chuck Norris facts.
