anathema has been such a snooze fest for me ever since a natural disaster. they used to have that sweet darkness to them that has now vanished. it's like they're doing the same song over and over again and it just keeps getting boring every time. whatever happened to this anathema. i loved it. I must be one of the few people who listens to a lot of really heavy dark stuff who doesn't like older Anathema. I love the fact that their music now is so uplifting. Alternative 4 is a great album with some great songs, but imo very one dimensional, and everything previous to that album bores me to tears. I love the experimentalism and progressiveness that really started to come in on Judgement and A Fine Day To Exit. A Natural Disaster and everything since that album is all gold in my opinion. the horrible black metal shit you listen to, and you dont like silent enigma/Pentecost or even eternity era anathema?? wtf? yep, i honestly just find it kinda dull. same as Doomantia said, it's just not to my tastes. i feel much the same way about Katatonia and Paradise Lost's earlier work too to be honest (same with My Dying Bride, though their development/evolution is obviously a bit different) . i guess i just don't dig the doom/death thing these bands were doing in their earlier days. QUOTE I haven't heard the new one yet, but it's not better than Silent Enigma. I know that much. |

That's not good? Really? You guys are bumming me out. If these bands that go light play any of these kinds of songs live in front of hardcore fans, they would start a mini-riot. That's why I was so jacked that Katatonia and Children of Bodm did at least song off every album on their anniversary tours. That shit is awesome. Hearing Lacuna Coil is about to do the same thing. if we the gods were written by metallica (and it sounds as though it could have been) or a band of that ilk, then it would be heralded as one of that (whichever band wrote it) bands legendary tracks for once i agree with teh wally faggot BOW TO THE CONTRARIAN MESSIAH |

There's some stuff scattered through their older albums I like but nothing is as good as the later stuff. A Simple Mistake and songs like that are
How could I, ever think, it's funny how, everything you swore would never change, is different now, like you said, you and me make it through, didn't quite, fell apart, where the fuck were you? |

We're Here Because We're Here > Weather Systems
Way too many female vocals on Weather Systems. Lack of dark ambience. Production is alot better, but the songs aren't as strong. I'd put this near the bottom of the their catalog. Glad you guys like it though. Maybe it'll grow on me. If one of Runk's underground stoner bands wrote an older Anathema song he'd be all over it. He sees a bunch of long haired metal guys and gets immediately hates it. Just how he is. That older Anathema track I posted is catered just like a newer Machine Head song btw. Groove-laden heavy opening mixed in with a instrumental section and alot of Iron Maiden riffing. The female vocals are outstanding though. I don't see how that is a negative thing. We clearly disagree, because I think the first half of WHBWH is far superior to the second half, and I believe you said the exact opposite.

I think the first half of WHBWH is far superior to the second half Indeed it is. On »We the Gods«: Talking instruments I agree, this is a track Metallica would still play today. Fuckin great. But I'm so glad the vocals have turned to what they are theses days. Most of the bands using these kind of growls sound unintentionally funny to me, this is no exception. |

yep. actually it is probably the vocals that turn me off their earlier albums too.
As I said though, i do love the more upbeat style they have nowadays. that said, I do love Judgement. that album is still mind bogglingly good. Religion is no fun. Fantastic album through and through, not a weak moment on it for me. The first thing I noticed is how upbeat it is compared to their prior albums, but this is no thing to complain about. It fits in with the weather we've been having.
Some really epic moments on this album, I goosebumps off of "The Storm before The Calm". Pure atmosphere, uplifting too. Love it. |

Decided to listen to this again after giving it a week or two rest and it came back 10 times better than I remember it before. "Internal Landscapes" is fucking gorgeous.

I love those opening two songs. the vocal melodies in the chorus of the "I had to let you go..." are some of my favourites they've done.

I'm to the point where I feel it's OK. I think We're Here is better. Maybe because I got more of a instrumental guitar driven and slightly more oldschool approach out of it.

Well you also complained about the female vocals, which are flat out phenomenal, so yeah... it's safe to say if you prize The Silent Enigma over Judgement to begin with, then you aren't going to really enjoy the newer stuff.
