Layne Stayley was 10 years ago yesterday, a much bigger loss imo my thoughts exactly. Respect to cobain but Layne was much more vulnerable/real IMO if that makes any sense at all. He truly put himself out there and shared his slow death with the world. I just never connected with nirvana's music the way I did with AIC's. Whatever - respect to both. each great in there own way and tremedous losses to the music world. Why the fuck would I blow up Chick-fil-A? It's fucking delicious |

RIP Kurt
And fuck Courtney Love, El Duce and Cali Dewitt. "Today, a young man on Acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream and we're the imagination of ourselves... I can't find an original version of this song (the very last song Kurt wrote and recorded. About 6 weeks before his death.
This is a pretty decent cover and the guy looks like a goofy version of Kurt himself but does a good job. I dont want to disrespect Kurt, but yeah, for me the tragedy is also within Layne. For me, he was so much more real.. everything he sang was pure from the heart and not just to look angry. Popular culture teaches us Kurt's life and death while Layne's is much more tragic (and in a way more justified).

^ that is all kinds of awesome, cheers!
As for all the (inevitable) Layne was better than Kurt replies, well all due respect to Mr Staley (as much as I love AIC) but for me Kurt was second to none. He had it all and his music could just as easily evoke sunshine as thunder, depression and happiness. In some ways its a shame though that Layne doesn't get the media attention his music deserves but as far as Kurt goes, his tragic death has surely been more of a fairytale for certain business people the last 18 years, couldn't have gone better if it was planned. RIP Kurt & Layne. |

I don't think it's really fair to either musician to be comparing Kurt to Layne. IMO both are different, generally appealed to different audiences, and had a very different impact on their musical landscape. That said, both are tragic figures of the music of that era.
The impact of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain on popular music in the 90s is undeniable. Layne's music on the other hand, was generally darker and perhaps (on the surface at least) more genuine and heart felt. Certainly less pop orientated than Kurt's own writing. Both are equally valid imo and both deserve respect. This thread is about Kurt Cobain though, so I'll just sign off with a couple of my favourites from their MTV unplugged session (obviously the second one is a cover, which depending on your perspective may be a bit telling, but oh well) Religion is no fun. Religion endangers the life and happiness of millions. It must stop. We appeal in particular to the youth of today. STOP THE MADNESS! There are better things in life. |

I don't get tired of promoting All Apologies from that show. That performance just did it to me. I don't know why, but I heard it, and if I wouldn't have known at that time already that Kurt Cobain was dead, I would have thought then that he would be soon. No idea why, but that song totally touched me (only in this live version).
