A couple weeks ago I bought the war t-shirt from the machine head store and i got it in the mail yesterday and I wore it to school today.
the shirt that says "war, lies, fear, change" on the back.
well, when i got to school today, my english teacher told me I couldn't wear it and I had to call home to get a different shirt.
well, I had no idea, but her son is in Iraq right now.
i mean, i know it has alot to do with politics and everything. but it's not like i was talking about it or anything.
because they tell us at school that we're not supposed to talk about religion or politics. but half the kids in that school dont really give a shit or they're just to dumb to know anything.
Did they have any right in telling me to take it off ?
Opinions, anybody?

If the school has a policy to not talk about politics etc, then that's the rule like it or not.

Follow the rules or switch schools.

also: i don't think a school is a proper place for wearing t-shirts/whatever with slogans and messages. 99% of the cases i find it not appropriate. wear it to somewhere else. not school.

edit: in my school, we had to wear school uniforms, so don't tell me about that stuff.

what kind of a stupid rule is that? a person who's not allowed to speak about politics or religion comes off as a dumbass in my eyes. well, in that case, i'd like to shake the school principals hand for raising a bunch of dumbfucks. GOOD JOB!

It's a fucking tshirt for drying out loud...
if it had something that could be offensive like nudity or swearing then ok... otherwise it's bullshit.
also polotics is intergral, and it's against human rights to ban free speach.

yeah, i thought school is supposed to be a place where you "voice" your opinions on certain matters.
but in this day and age, i guess we're supposed to be silent about things like that.
i guess if the teachers started talking anything and everything to do with politics and religion, the kids would go home to their parents and tell them, and then the parents would call the school and their would be an outrage.

I work for a school district and that's pretty much the way it is. I'm pretty sure you, or your parents, had to sign something at the beginning of the year that said you read the school's 'Code of Conduct' or whatever they call it. I'm pretty sure they have a 'Zero Tolerance' policy also. Regardless of how harmless your shirt might be you have no say in the matter.

what is the idea of this policy? if kids don't get teached in school how politics work, then how should they be able to have some judgment of the stuff going on in the world? 80% of todays youth is too lazy or just don't give a damn, what's going on.

i'm just worked up on the whole subject tonight, because my government is a bunch of DICKS, only making the current world economics situation worse. and the people are not doing anything. everyone's just whining, but no action is done. our next years government budget will probably go deficit, because they are not able to work shit out. so what they do - raise taxes, instead of cutting down their own immense expenses. 08grr.gif 08grr.gif 08grr.gif

Robyn's little hissy fit reminds me of some emo douche on the Korn board back in 1999 who started a thread because his parents got upset when he showed up for breakfast with the Korn lyric "Dirty little fuck" written on his hand.

Yes, I used to frequent the Korn board, but that's not the issue. 06shady.gif.

I don't recall ever using the term "hissy fit" before. Nice try though.

You must have me confused with someone else, which is difficult to comprehend seeing how thoroughly unique I am in every imaginable respect.

You both completely missed the point. sigh.gif

It's not about what comes out of your mouth. You're completely free to speak your mind in an intelligible manner in the classroom. School districts have a dress code and, as I stated before, after you've acknowledged the fact that you've read the 'Student Code of Conduct' and signed the form then you have no say in the manner. If you want to dispute the dress code then do it before you sign on the dotted line.

I wasn't talking about what you wear.

I was talking about what you are allowed to say.

And you quoted him, say that was true. There is a difference between wearing a t-shirt with political/religious slogans, and actually talking about politics and religion.

You can see the t-shirt view from both angles, ok so Robyn isn't allowed her MH shirt, but at the same time, I'm sure kids aren't allowed to wear a shirt that says "God is great" or "I DIE FOR ALLAH!!".

i actually know a kid who wore a cross on a chain around his neck, and the principal told him to tuck it in his shirt.

Tinker v. Des Moines says that students do not lose their civil rights when they enter the schoolhouse.

In reality, I'd suggest you just go along with it because it's a shitstorm. But if they banned your shirt wearing because of a "political statement" (I don't knonw what the rest of the shirt looks like, maybe it's also offensive in other ways) - call your local ACLU branch and see if they want to take up a case if you want to start something.

~ Fox ~
What are "ripples in the very fabric of space"? No one at Johns Hopkins or any school has the slightest idea what this means, yet the phrase is batted around by tenured professors who claim to be certain they have already figured out creation. "Ripples in the very fabric of space" have never been observed or experimentally created, nor can the idea be falsified. Once, in science, an idea that cannot be falsified was presumed meaningless; now it's presumed true! The "multiverse," the "brane," the compacted dimensions assumed by string theory -- these notions are received with perfect seriousness in contemporary departments of physics though all are unobservable, and based on what's known so far, can neither be proved nor disproved. Just like God, only better for getting tenure. - Greg Easterbrook
